What is a kidney stone?
Kidney stones come in a variety of mineral types:
Kidney stones are deposits of mineral that can occur in urine-collecting spaces of the kidneys. Stones can migrate into the ureters, the bladder and eventually be voided in the urine. Kidney stones can be small, like tiny pebbles, but frequently are much larger. They can be smooth or rough, solitary or numerous.
The kidneys are responsible for maintaining the body’s balance of water, minerals, salts and other substances. Urine is the product of this filtering process. Under certain conditions, substances normally dissolved in the urine, such as calcium, oxalate and phosphate, can separate out as crystals. A kidney stone forms when these crystals accumulate to form a solid mass.
